Following its celebrated run at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, internationally-acclaimed exhibition Music for Everyone: Variations on a Theme by interdisciplinary artist Song-Ming Ang and curator Michelle Ho is now in Singapore.
Presented at the National Museum of Singapore, the homecoming exhibition will see an addition of three physical works for local audiences to experience for the first time. The exhibition references a series of music concerts organised by Singapore’s Ministry of Culture from 1971 to 1985, responding to state directives that deploy the arts as a means of nation building during this period. Through the humble recorder and the universal language of music-making, the exhibition investigates our relationship with music on a personal and societal level. This “remix” presentation of Music for Everyone: Variations on a Theme will be accompanied by online dialogue sessions and digital programmes, offering an opportunity for audiences here and overseas to learn more about Singapore’s lesser-known music appreciation history through a contemporary lens.
