16 artists with disabilities from ARTDIS (Singapore) Ltd, formerly known as Very Special Arts, pay tribute to the nation in an exhibition titled Unseen Singapore. From 4 August – 31 October 2022, and with the kind support of Maybank Singapore, 44 paintings will be on display at The Gallery @ ART:DIS to celebrate Singapore’s 57th year of independence.
Since that momentous milestone in 1965, the nation’s history has seen many peaks and troughs, and her citizens bear witness to it all with great pride. Through three thematic sections – Past, Present, Future – artists from ART:DIS demonstrate their nostalgia, appreciation and hope for Singapore.
In Past, scenes of bygone eras remind us how far the little red dot has progressed. Forgotten culture, unbeknownst to the millennial generation such as dining curb-side and playing in nature, are thus passed down memories from old to young and filled with wistful affection.
In Present, hallmarks of the island state take centre stage. From embracing multi-culturalism to successful public housing projects and our nickname as Garden City, these landscapes illustrate the achievements of the nation in a short period of time.
In Future, icons of the cosmopolitan city such as magnificent skylines and abundant greenery reveal the country’s ambition. With an ardent belief that the nation will surely soar to even greater heights, these paintings encompass well-wishes for Singapore’s journey
ahead.
Across a variety of mediums such as traditional watercolours oils, to modern renderings in acrylics, Chinese Ink and even photography, Unseen Singapore promises to be a great conversation starter as we swap stories about this country we call home.
