Unwrapped: Is drinking alcohol the main cause of sexual assault?

  • The National University of Singapore (NUS) is coming down hard on students drinking alcohol on campus in an effort to curb sexual offences linked to alcohol consumption.
  • A report by the university found that seven of eight complaints of student sexual misconduct in the second half of 2021 involved drinking.
  • Research over the years have shown that at least 50 per cent of sexual assaults involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator and/or victim was drinking.
  • Through our weekly series Unwrapped this week, TheHomeGround Asia takes a look at whether we should be quick to blame alcohol or hold people accountable for their actions.

In our weekly series Unwrapped, TheHomeGround Asia takes a closer look at major stories and happenings that impact Singaporeans.

Going to the university is more than just academic learning. It is a major growing up period and what matters most in are the life lessons that make every undergraduate a stronger person. It also gives students the illusion of freedom.

With this freedom comes the opportunity to begin drinking. College drinking culture terms like Wine Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, Free-flow Friday and Sunday Funday, can make it easy for students to normalise drinking habits.

Sexual assault is also common among undergraduates. At least half of these sexual assaults involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, or even the victim. This translates to an equal number of sexual assaults on campus that did not involve drinking.

The team examines whether alcohol should be blamed for sexual assaults and banned or that young adults should just be taught respect for themselves and for others to not even think about molest or rape.
