Unwrapped: The takeover of the Sports Hub – is this a bailout?

In our weekly series Unwrapped, TheHomeGround Asia takes a closer look at major stories and happenings that impact Singaporeans.

Government agency Sport Singapore (SportSG) is terminating its public-private partnership (PPP) with current operator SportsHub Pte Ltd (SHPL).

Announcing this on 10 June, SportsSG is taking over the ownership and management of the Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang from 9 December, wanting to make it more accessible to the broader community in Singapore.

While the PPPs in other sectors such as transport, public utilities and education are successful, this one seemed to have been wracked with pain.

And ushering SHPL out meant SportsSG had to pay the consortium of four companies’ construction debt and open value of the facility, as well as take over the operating costs.

The team looks at whether the move is a way for the hub to be more accessible to the broader community or it is merely a bailout by the government.
