BlizzCon, the convention for fans of esports developer Blizzard Entertainment, will return in an online format on 19-20 February next year.

In a statement to the press, Blizzard announced that plans are still in motion over the online convention, but hopes fans are excited for what is to come. “We’re putting together a little something early next year to channel the spirit of BlizzCon into the form of an online show… we wanted to provide a heads-up on how [the fans] can be part of the online fun,” the statement said.

Community involvement for the fans

Blizzard is hoping to stick to core convention events, such as cosplaying and panels to keep the fan community involved. There will be a community showcase, which will include art, digital storytelling, cosplay contests, and a spotlight event for fans to unleash their creativity. BlizzCon’s biggest tradition, the March of the Murlocs, where fans dress as members of the Murloc race from the Warcraft Universe, will also take on a virtual format.

What happened to this year’s BlizzCon?

This year’s BlizzCon event was cancelled in late May due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. BlizzCon executive producer Saralyn Smith did mention in the statement that shifting the convention online had been discussed for this year.

“We’re talking about how we might be able to channel the BlizzCon spirit and connect with [the fans] in some way online, far less impacted by the state of health and safety protocols for mass in-person gatherings,” she said.
