Finding Comfort in a Time Without Travel

The Travel Nostalgia

Ah, travel. How we all miss the experience of hopping on board a plane and immersing ourselves in a different world for a few days or weeks. How the wanderlust spirit in so many of us await in hopes that we can travel again someday soon.

It’s been more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic was first declared. More than a year since borders around the globe have closed and nations entered into states of lockdown, one after another. More than a year since the vast majority of us have found ourselves land-bound, unable to visit even our favourite nearby haunt that is Johor Bahru.

Today, we’re beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with the global vaccine rollout, but progress remains slow in many countries. With long-haul travel potentially only resuming in 2023, it’s hard to not begin feeling stir-crazy in our tiny island-city.

Finding Comfort in a Time Without Travel

During this pandemic, we’re all seeking our adventures in safer, more mundane ways, and an American seems to have found his dose of safe travels in a most unexpected place – a Singapore Airlines’ in-flight safety video (but without the safety briefing, which has been replaced with the soothing melody of languid orchestral music).

Matthew Klint, an avid traveller, reminisces about his time in Singapore through the video, recalling its sights and sounds and finding comfort in “a bit of the past, with beautiful music in the background, along with a renewed hope that there will be a day when [he] can step into Singapore again.”

How Can We Satiate Our Wanderlust?

We can all learn a lesson from Klint during these uncertain times, and find a little peace and comfort in the little things.

Perhaps that can come in the form of in-flight safety videos, or maybe you’ll find your adventure in books that take you to a faraway, fantasy land. Consider taking a leaf out of Klint’s books and appreciating the stunning city that we live in by becoming a tourist in our little red dot (you’ll be helping to boost our economy as well – win-win!). How about building up to more luxurious ventures by going for a staycation, or stretching your sea legs on a cruise to nowhere?

Whatever the form or medium, we hope you manage to find your own version of adventure during the pandemic.

P.S. If you’re constantly running out of ideas on what to do in Singapore, check back with us every Friday as we compile a list of things you can do over the weekends!
