Unwrapped: No more chicken run

In our weekly series Unwrapped, TheHomeGround Asia takes a closer look at major stories and happenings that impact Singaporeans.

Feathers in Singapore were ruffled at the start of the week when the Malaysian government announced halting the exports of some 3.6 million whole chickens a month from June until domestic production and prices stabilise.

Many have gone into panic-buying mode, snapping up fresh chicken and clearing the shelves at several wet markets and supermarkets.

One entreprenuerial Singaporean even went as far as claiming to have stocked up to 500kg of chicken and selling the meat for $80 a kilogram on Carousell.

The team looks at whether the move is necessary since half of the chicken imported here are from Brazil, and that there are alternatives to protein in Singapore.
