Spill The Tea

Hands up if you tried the dalgona coffee trend or perhaps baked yourself a Basque burnt cheesecake at the beginning of the year as the pandemic started to blow up. With the circuit breaker period forcing the entire country into a nationwide lockdown since April this year, many have discovered their creative and entrepreneurial side with their newfound hobbies in an attempt to make some extra cash or simply to share their creations with the community.

From baking decadent and tasty goods, creating homemade crafts or starting an e-commerce business, we bring you 7 promising home-based businesses that came about during the circuit breaker period that are definitely here to stay!

The Circuit Baker

This local baked goods business is quite the conversation starter with their quirky and ‘punny’ brand name, but it is their hearty, homemade brownies that will really wow you. The Circuit Baker sells the heartiest brownies that are packed with flavour and make for the ideal comfort food.

What makes them unique is that they only sell one flavour: their signature sea salt fudgey brownies. They come in boxes of 6 that are a luxurious mix of sweet and salty, and are usually sold out in a matter of minutes. It’s definitely the fastest fingers first!

Bitten and Co

There’s no one that could possibly say ‘no’ to cookies — everyone loves them. At Bitten and Co, they make halal chocolate-filled cookies that will instantly melt in your mouth. But we’re not just talking about your typical chocolate chip cookies — we’re talking about their special chocolate lava filling.

You read that right! Each cookie is filled with a rich chocolate lava filling that feels like a bite-sized chocolate lava cake. Perfect for savouring until the last bite or devouring at just the first one.

Bush Bakes

With another contender in the cookie arena, Bush Bakes makes freshly baked cookies in a wide array of unique flavours ranging from walnut dark chocolate, smores, strawberry and cream, and even a ‘matchadamia’ flavour, which are matcha-flavoured cookies mixed with macadamia nuts.

But that’s not all. They also make homemade brownies and granola for those who aren’t craving for cookies at the moment.

Pop Goes The Taste Buds

Looking for macarons, madeleines and customised cakes? They have it all at Pop Goes The Taste Buds. Their carefully-crafted artisanal macarons are available in coffee, dark chocolate raspberry, marshmallow peppermint, and a lemon meringue flavour.

To celebrate Singapore’s 55th birthday, they even made special kaya butter macarons that were decorated with hand-painted Peranakan tile designs. Talk about keeping your roots alive and tasty! Give their other baked goods a try like their modern pandesal, which is a traditional bread roll originating from the Philippines.

Sewwerks

Moving over to the world of textiles, Sewwerks is yet another home-based business that was birthed during the circuit breaker period. Founder Aryani Raemi decided to take her passion for sewing and turn it into a business venture by creating vibrant and functional scrunchies that will certainly not break the bank.

In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this September, Raemi has collaborated with her cousins (and their mothers!) to create a small collection of tote bags, where part of the funds raised will be donated to the Singapore Breast Cancer Foundation. Each has been hand-painted with love and text customisations can be made with no extra charges as well. Simple, chic accessories that support a great cause — what’s not to love?

Beads By Joyce Kwok

Beads are a great and simple way to accessorise and elevate any outfit, and Founder Joyce Kwok knows that for sure. Joyce’s handmade beaded creations range from simple no-frills shoulder bags to more intricate pieces like her customised rings, where you can add different charms and coloured beads to it.

Besides a range of accessories, they also make adorable handbag keychains that add a nice pop of colour.

Sabs Studios

What started out as a personal blog has now become an e-commerce website that houses various lifestyle brands. Sabs Studios is a platform for different business owners to market and showcase their brand on the website, which was just launched last July.

Through collaboration and partnership, they retail a range of different lifestyle products from makeup, skincare, as well as kids’ apparel. Despite being relatively new in the business, Sabs Studios is a promising business with a lot to offer, which consumers definitely need to look out for.
