Unwrapped: 377A repealed — we should have moved on and accepted one another already

  • When Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the repeal of Section 377A, it was just the first step to remove a law that cannot be enforced.
  • Yet the government will continue “uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage”, which means Singapore will not be approving same sex marriage any time soon.
  • Through our weekly series Unwrapped this week, TheHomeGround Asia takes a look at how the people in Singapore – both the conservatives and the LGBTQ community – should put the past behind us and move on to accept each other.

Section 377A of the Penal Code has been repealed after having taken an arduous 15 years and several legal challenges to do so.

And while the LGBTQ community celebrated, is this celebration a short-lived one as the government continues to “uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage”?

There is no doubt that Singapore will continue to recognise only the marriage between one man and one woman and the many policies rely on this definition. They include public housing, education, adoption rules, advertising standards and film classification.

In our weekly series Unwrapped, TheHomeGround Asia takes a closer look at major stories and happenings that impact Singaporeans.

We discuss if this is a win-win situation for both the conservative and the LGBTQ communities or if the two should let bygones be bygones and move on to accept each other.
