Across the globe, those tuning into the 2022 Oscars could not have missed the now-famous slap that actor Will Smith gave to comedian and host of the Academy Awards on 27 March. A source told Variety that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spoke with Smith on Zoom before commencing an emergency board meeting on 1 April over his assault.
The questions now are: Have we become too sensitive to hear a joke without responding with an over-the-top reaction or resorting to violence? Is resorting to fistfights the way to go while confronting who is deemed a bully? And is apologising days after the fact too late to mend fences?
