Unwrapped: The Will-Smith-Chris-Rock slap: Is getting physical uncalled for?

  • Will Smith popping Chris Rock is probably the most viewed physical interaction at the 2022 Oscars on 27 March.
  • It had the world divided in half — those rooting for Smith, believing he was defending wife Jada Pinkett’s honour, and those in Rock’s camp because he did not retaliate.
  • Through our weekly series Unwrapped this week, TheHomeGround Asia takes a look at whether we have all become too sensitive to hear a joke without responding with an over-the-top reaction or resorting to violence.
  • (Updated 2 April 2022) Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy after the slapping incident. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” he said in a statement. The Academy said it accepted the resignation and would “continue to move forward” with disciplinary proceedings.

In our weekly series Unwrapped, TheHomeGround Asia takes a closer look at major stories and happenings that impact Singaporeans.

Across the globe, those tuning into the 2022 Oscars could not have missed the now-famous slap that actor Will Smith gave to comedian and host of the Academy Awards on 27 March. A source told Variety that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spoke with Smith on Zoom before commencing an emergency board meeting on 1 April over his assault.

The questions now are: Have we become too sensitive to hear a joke without responding with an over-the-top reaction or resorting to violence? Is resorting to fistfights the way to go while confronting who is deemed a bully? And is apologising days after the fact too late to mend fences?
