Premiering on 12 November, Happy Great World《欢喜大世界》is Channel 8’s newest series designed to keep seniors updated on government initiatives and support measures through entertainment.
Happy Great World is produced in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI), and is the ministry’s first variety series on Channel 8’s primetime belt.
What will the show be like?
Airing every Thursday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Channel 8, the show takes inspiration from the “Great World” Amusement Park, formerly located at Kim Seng Promenade — allowing audiences to reminisce their favourite childhood moments and gain insightful knowledge about current events through the different segments of the programme.
The hour-long programme will be hosted by Pornsak, Kate Pang, Kele, and Marcus Chin — well-loved names in local entertainment — and will feature other popular artistes such as Zheng Geping, Hong Huifang, Richard Low, and Tosh Zhang, who will be sharing about a myriad of topics that concern Singaporeans, specifically the Merdeka Generation, the show’s key target demographic.
What are the different segments of the show?
The show will be divided into three segments. The first segment, known as “Happy Foodie”, will feature celebrity chefs Melvyn Lee and Charlie Tham whipping up special dishes, while two teams (consisting of a celebrity and a member of the public) will compete for a chance to taste the dishes in a series of food-related trivia questions.
The second segment, “Happy Together”, is a time for invited celebrity guests to share their opinions on current affairs, such as job support for older workers, healthcare, and the cost of living in Singapore.
Finally, the show will end on a high note (pun intended) with “Happy Music Hall”, where renowned singers such as Wen Zhang, Gigi Gu Xing Yun, and Dawn Yip will serenade viewers with familiar tunes from the past.
“We are happy to collaborate with MCI once again to bring quality content across our platforms to our audiences. Happy Great World will discuss current topics and share informative health tips from experts, while featuring hit songs which are oldies but goldies in a lively infotainment format. With the added star power from guest appearances by popular artistes, celebrity chefs, and veteran singers, we believe the show will be well received by everyone,” says Simone Lum, Head, Chinese Audience, Mediacorp.
