Life After COVID: Yang Ce the Ceramic Artist

  • Follow the lives of eights artists in Singapore as they reveal how COVID-19 has affected them and how they adapted to it. This is the story of Yang Ce, the Ceramic Artist.

She has been dabbling with clay art for the past 8 years but feels that she only started focusing on the craft this year. Her mentor, Mr Chua, an avid collector of ceramic antiques, has been helping her hone her craft by looking to history for inspiration.

When the pandemic hit, Yang Ce could no longer continue making ceramics and conduct classes, but that did not deter her from making art. She pivoted to fabrics and made soft toys and an A-Z animal quilt for her son. Her classes moved online with innovative portable clay kits sent to the students.

Now she is looking forward to collaborating with jewellery makers and even chefs to introduce new functionalities to her ceramics.

As she heads back to the studio in Tanah Merah all they way from her home in Bukit Panjang, Yang Ce shares her vulnerabilities in working alone and rediscovering herself.
