I’ve been using the Occulus Quest 2 for a few months now and here’s what I think of the all-in-one virtual reality (VR) headset.

Design

It was released in October 2020 at a very attractive starting price of US$299 and it only comes in white. It has a USB-C charging and data port and a single 3.5mm headphone jack. The headset can be used fully wireless, making it one of the most portable VR headsets.

Controllers

The headset comes with AA batteries in the controllers and they surprisingly last quite long, partly because of the better battery consumption rates of the controllers compared to its predecessor. The tracking on the controllers work very well. For games that require swift movement like Beat Saber, the Occulus Quest 2 works smoothly and the response time is almost flawless.

Base headset

The spongy face cover absorbs sweat very easily, so it’s highly recommended to purchase a silicon cover or third party leather cover if you plan to play a lot of physically demanding games. The head strap is quite comfortable if you get used to it, but since it’s just a flimsy strap, the Quest 2 feels a bit front heavy. A solution is to get the Elite Strap for the Quest 2, which provides much more comfort overall. Unfortunately, some users have reported that their Elite Straps have started breaking or cracking even after a few hours of use. However, some users’ Elite Straps have been fine, even mine. Users have theorised it to be a batch issue. Otherwise, there are third party strap options that can be found online as well.

Games and apps

Currently there is a comprehensive variety of apps, games, and experiences on the Oculus Store. Some popular games that are available on the Quest 2 are Beat Saber, SUPERHOT, Population:ONE. Popular apps available to view images and videos are Wander, YoutubeVR, and OculusTV.

The store can be easily accessed through the headset or the Oculus app on a mobile device. However, all prices listed on the store are in USD only. The Quest 2 is capable of playing and viewing 360 images and videos at high resolutions. It provides an extremely immersive viewing experience.

Using Oculus Link, it’s also possible to play PC VR games on the Quest 2, as long as your computer is able to support those games. A Facebook account is required to use the Oculus Quest 2 since Facebook owns Oculus.

The cheapest 64gb model is plenty to install a modest amount of games and apps. In my opinion, the Oculus Quest 2 is a great starting point for anyone interested in experiencing VR.
